
"That's absolutely right, Benoit. Blue is usually a structural color, the structure of the surface absorbing all other wavelengths and causing only blue light to be reflected from it. This has been described for Odonata cuticle, but I don't remember the exact details. So if you modified that cuticle slightly, it might not reflect blue in exactly the same way, thus the duller, darker (or paler) spots. Red is a pigment and should still look red even if you change the structure of the cuticle.
It still remains for someone to dissect a dragonfly abdomen to look inside the surface.
I noticed that Benjamin Moore paints have a color called "dragonfly," and when I looked at it I could not think of a single dragonfly that was that color!
