Based on currently used identification keys (Laibner 2000; Lohse 1979; Platia 1994), all three types should be considered as I. picipennis (Bach 1852). However, our morphological studies reveal consistent differences with respect to the proportions of the antennomeres and the pronotum as well as the shape of the forehead. Thus, the TR-type and the two other Idolus species are morphologically distinguishable and are most likely reproductively isolated in the field due to their specific pheromones. This suggests that I. picipennis (Bach 1852) in Central Europe should, in fact, be considered as three distinct species. We currently are comparing all available type material to clear the taxonomic position and naming within the genus Idolus. Most likely, the originally described I. picipennis (Bach 1852) is identical to the type characterized by the farnesyl esters in its pheromone (Tolasch et al. 2013).

First, although the morphological variation within I. picipennis was well known, all morphotypes were erroneously synonymized by various authors as one species (Cate 2007).
